Damia EttakAdoumi

Manager and Founder

Years ago, while studying my Bachelor of Science, I realised there was a gap in services being offered to people in science and technology.

Yes, there were science communicators turning science stories into plain English for the public. But people who could write for other researchers and peer funding providers were rare.

Marketing agencies existed that could create value for clients. But marketers with a science background were non-existent. Even today, it’s a hard combination to find.

So I worked as a grant program coordinator, communication adviser, copy writer and project manager. I went back to university to get my invaluable Master of Business Administration (with Distinction) and took short courses with the Public Relations Institute of Australia.

The result is Straight Up Science, which was launched in 2011. Ever since, I have loved working with a range of established and upcoming innovators in research and technology.

Emma Pink

Communication and Engagement Consultant

I’ll start by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the lands and water where I live and work and paying my respects to Elders past, present and emerging. I seek to listen and learn from them.

After more than 20 years working as a communications and engagement professional within large organisations in the UK and Australia, I took the plunge and set out as a freelance consultant in 2021.

I have been lucky enough to work with a diverse range of technically minded people to understand the real essence of what they’re trying to communicate or what they want to achieve. I then distil this into something accessible for their target audience, whether that be other technically minded people, broader stakeholders, or the general public.

Examples of my experience providing high level communications and engagement advice to senior managers and executives, include advising the Chief Public Health Officer, Chief Medical Officer and Director of Emergency Management as Comms Lead during the 2009 H1N1 outbreak, advising the Group Executive Director of Water at DEW how to deal with an issue within a community advisory panel which was impacting activity on a major infrastructure project and, more recently, advising the new Chief Executive of SAFECOM on how to take the agency’s essential Alert SA responsibility forward.

Chris Matthews

Consultant

I work with companies and other organisations who have a desire to improve their businesses and society through innovation and business planning. I believe in Treaty, Fairness, Nature Positive and the overarching goals of the UN SDGs. I deeply feel the sense of urgency needed to stop our acceleration towards climate, nature and social catastrophe, and hope to do my part in the short time I have on this planet.

Using my extensive experience in the technical and corporate worlds, plus my abilities in business development, start-ups, education, relationship building, marketing and communications, my passion is cutting through and delivering meaningful outcomes, linking innovation in both technical and social domains. My education background is a Bachelor of Science (geology), and PhD (heat flow).

Dr Elissa Mortimer

Consultant

I am a research management and communication specialist and proudly love science! I have worked in the clinical and preventative health sector for 24 years across diverse health and disease states including nutrition, maternal and child health, blood borne viruses, tobacco control, eye health and non-communicable diseases. My specialisation in global health has enabled me to work in Fiji, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, India, Malawi and, of course, Australia. During my 11 years in academia, I led and contributed to health, science and technology grant proposal bids for Australian Government Category 1 funders and global philanthropic funders including Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

I hold a Bachelor of Science, Master of Nutrition and Dietetics, and a Doctorate of Public Health in which I designed and led a randomised controlled trial with an HIV-positive population in India. In addition, I have expertise across state, territory and national government health departments, gathered during both employment roles and as a management consultant.

Hannah Dalby

Website Designer and Developer

Working in the marketing industry for 10 years now, specifically working on website design and development for the last 7 years. I’ve worked with brand new start up businesses, national companies, universities and training organisations.

I live by the mantra that anything is possible, we just have to find a way to make it happen. This translates directly into website development, creating designs and functionality that serve exactly what your business needs. My skills and networks have come from having clients with complex needs, and doing everything I can to find a way to make it happen.

I also understand that business moves fast, and we often don’t have time to wait around for things, so I’ve made a point of creating systems to get work done incredibly fast. If you need it done tomorrow, I’ll do everything in my power to make that happen.

I’ve been working with Straight-Up for the last 6 months, taking on the planning, advising, meeting, designing and creating with all website projects. I’ll work directly with you, focusing on the purpose for your website and working back to create an online presence that achieves your objectives.

Ruby Fletcher

Graphic Designer and Illustrator

With over 10 years’ experience in the creative industry, I’ve had roles ranging from a design lecturer at TAFE SA, graduate visual art teacher, wide format printer by trade, and freelance graphic designer.

As I teach others how to use  the Adobe Creative Suite, my knowledge is extensive allowing me to create high-quality design products such as posters, flyers, books, logos, business stationary, signage and more. I also produce detailed illustrations to portray scientific concepts and other complex design briefs.

I have worked alongside Straight Up for over 7 years, in projects where we work closely to successfully meet clients’ needs in an efficient and professional manner. My method to develop designs and illustrations based on technical concepts involves meeting with you to understand the concept you wish to portray, sketching or designing a few options for you to proceed with, then completing the work with your ongoing tweaks and refinements.

Megan Morse

Communications Consultant

I am an experienced communications specialist, bringing calm and clarity to science writing, editing and visual communication projects and to the development and implementation of communication
strategies.

With a background in ecology and over 10 years of experience in communication roles and in sustainability education, my strengths are in applying ecological thinking to understanding complex systems and in pinpointing the big compelling ideas behind research and results.

I think of all communication in terms of stories, which is fundamental in bringing complex scientific ideas to a range of audiences. There is great power in meaningful stories to change the world.

“Damia works with you to peel back the layers to draw out the core story and pitch, as well as think through the strategy of taking that back out to the target market."

Dr Jordan Parham, 1414 Degrees Ltd

"Straight Up is very good at interpreting complex situations, and understanding what’s required for an opportunity."

Professor Andrew Lowe, University of Adelaide
